Getting Started.....

Inspiration

My husband and I have always been interested in model trains.  We tried to build an HO scale a few years back, but we were balked by a lack of room for our endeavor!  We put it off until "someday".  Once my son was born, and recently at the age of two decided he loved choo choos, we started to rethink our railroad.  Instead of HO we decided to go with N scale.  We had taken our son to a railroad festival, and we saw a N scale layout built on a 80 x 32 hollow core door.  We realized that we had plenty of room for that, and our hobby began!

Layout Design

We bought our door, and some 2 x 2's.  We built 2 ft legs, which is the perfect size for our 2 yr old to see the action.  We used more 2 x 2's to brace the legs for stability.  We sweetalked some scrapwood out of my Dad, and made the control platform off one end of the table.  I bought some heavy black cotton fabric from Walmart and we folded it under and stapled it around the edges for skirting.  Our layout we decided to go with a long oval with an inside loop on one end and a branch line coming off either side.  For my landscaping I am doing a farm and rural area on one end and a town on the other.
