This is the rural end of my layout. I started by painting the whole base a dirt brown color. In case there are any bits that show through it will look like dirt. So far I have done a farmhouse, barn, chicken coop, cow pasture, and a small shotgun style house.

Here you can see my farmhouse and barn. They were both plastic models and molded in color, but I ended up painted both of them for realism. I used acrylic craft paint instead of plastic model paint. Mostly for cost, but also for easier water based cleanup and flat paint finish.

Here is my shotgun house. It was tricky since it was a wood model. The realism and detail is really awesome but they are harder to build and paint. The dirt road and the dirt around the barn I did with different colors of fine ballast. I kind of mixed a few colors to get the road color. I also took one of my N scale vehicles and ran it through the "dirt road" to make some tire ruts.
